Organizational Mission

The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International is to support the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide

Society Vision

The vision of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people.

Qualifications for Regular Membership

Sigma Theta Tau International does not discriminate. Candidates are qualified for membership so long as eligibility requirements are met. There are two ways to become a member of our organization; as a student or as a nurse leader. Students enrolled in a nursing program in the SON, and who meet the following criteria, will be invited to join the Upsilon Beta Chapter of STTI each Spring semester based on the following criteria:

Undergraduate Students (Entry Level)

  • ½ of the nursing curriculum completed
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher)
  • rank in the upper 35 percentile of the graduating class;
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity

Registered Nurse Students (RN-BSN)

  • 12 credit hours at current school completed
  • ½ of the nursing curriculum completed
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher)
  • rank in the upper 35 percentile of graduating class
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity

Graduate Students (Master's and Doctorate)

  • ¼ of the nursing curriculum completed
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.5 or higher)
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity

Nursing professionals not previously inducted as nursing students and not currently enrolled in a nursing program can also join STTI as a Nurse Leader using the criteria listed below. Nurse Leader Candidates must:

  • Be legally recognized to practice nursing in his/her country
  • Have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field
  • Demonstrate achievement in nursing
