You are being asked to take part in a research study carried out by Drs. Vaughn, Weismuller, Jung, and Ms. Ringl. This consent form explains the research study and your part in it if you decide to join the study.  Please read the form carefully, taking as much time as you need. Ask the researcher to explain anything you don’t understand. You can decide not to join the study. If you join the study, you can change your mind later or quit at any time.  There will be no penalty or loss of services or benefits if you decide to not take part in the study or quit later.

What is this study about?
This “Enrichment Markers of Better Relationships, Academics, and Cultural Enhancement (EMBRACE) Project provides assistance to students pursuing a degree in the Nursing Program at California State University, Fullerton. Your participation will include academic and socio-cultural support programs to improve your school performance and decrease student related stress.

The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of the support services on student outcomes, such as persistence to graduation.

You are being asked to take part because you are either a baccalaureate or graduate nursing student (pursuing Nurse Anesthesia or Nurse Midwifery).

Taking part in the study will take about 2 hours of your time over the course of your program to complete the surveys and participate in the focus group activity.

What will I be asked to do if I am in this study?
If you take part in the study, you will be asked to:

  • Use a computer to access the surveys.
  • Complete a demographic profile.
  • Complete additional surveys that identify various social cultural elements, such as motivation, time management, wellness, writing and reading skills, and family support.
  • Participate in focus group interviews. These interviews will be audiotaped.
  • You can refuse to answer any questions in any test, survey, or interview.
  • All results will be reported as group data with no identifiers used to maintain your confidentiality.  

Are there any benefits to me if I am in this study?
The potential benefits to you for taking part in this study are:

  • Enhanced communication skills.
  • Increased cultural and self-awareness.
  • Improved academic performance.

Are there any risks to me if I am in this study?
The potential risks from taking part in this study are:

  • Emotional discomfort or anxiety associated with sensitive questions. If this occurs, please contact the nurse counselor.

Will my information be kept anonymous or confidential?
The data for this study will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. No published results will identify you, and your name will not be associated with the findings. Under certain circumstances, information that identifies you may be released for internal and external reviews of this project.

Data are protected via password protected website database. The database is on the university server, a well-protected and backed up site in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD). Only the PI and College of HHD IT will have access to the database.  

The results of this study will be used for publications and presented at professional meetings, but the identities of all participants will remain confidential.

The data for this study will be kept for 5 years to complete required reports for the sponsor and for dissemination of results at conferences via presentations and posters.

Are there any costs or payments for being in this study?
There are no costs nor are there payments for your participation in this study.

What are my rights as a research study volunteer?
Your participation in this research study is completely voluntary.  You may choose not to be a part of this study.  There will be no penalty to you if you choose not to take part.  You also may choose not to answer specific questions or to stop participating at any time. 

What does my signature on this consent form mean?
Your signature on this form means that:

  • You understand the information given to you in this form.
  • You have been able to ask the researcher questions and state any concerns.
  • The researcher has responded to your questions and concerns.
  • You believe you understand the research study and the potential benefits and risks that are involved.

I have carefully read and/or I have had the terms used in this consent form and their significance explained to me.  By entering my name below, I agree that I am at least 18 years of age and agree to participate in this project. Entering my name below indicates that I am giving permission to audio tape my responses during the focus group if I participate in one.
